ABSTRACT

The research objective was to find out: 1) the characteristics of city parks in Semarang; 2) child accessibility in city parks; and 3) the extent to which city parks can fulfill children‘s rights in the context of Child-Friendly City in Semarang. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative research method, with data collection techniques in the form of observation and interviews. The results of this study indicate that the characteristics of city parks in Semarang are related to infrastructure, distribution of groups of visitors, relations with the surrounding social context, and management of city parks. In terms of children‘s accessibility in city parks, research findings refer to the activities of children, activities supporting city parks, as well as some challenges encountered. Based on this explanation, the city park in Semarang is one of the efforts to fulfill the elements of children‘s rights in the context of Child-Friendly City, especially in education clusters, the use of leisure time, and cultural activities with indicators of the availability of facilities for creative and friendly recreational activities for children outside school, which can be accessed by all children. The conclusion of this study is that the availability and accessibility of city parks as one of the children‘s public spaces is a new energy in disseminating the idea of Child-Friendly City. Strengthening this idea requires the synergy of the government and citizens in institutional and operational aspects.
