ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces a utilitarian perspective on animal experimentation and genetic modification. After some general remarks about ethics and moral theories it introduces the basics of utilitarianism and then points out the considerations that guide a utilitarian evaluation of specific cases. A utilitarian perspective might seem easy and straightforward, since it simply asks us to do whatever has the best consequences. Yet, its application to real-life cases is extremely complex, due to the complexity of real life.
