ABSTRACT

A feminist ethic of care requires paying attention to animals’ own opinions about how they wish to be treated. In the case of induced genetic mutation of animals in laboratory experimentation, it is posited that no animal would assent to having themselves “disenhanced,” that is, reconstituted genetically in ways that impair their normal functioning. Humans have an ethical responsibility to respect the animals’ wishes and to refrain from engaging in harmful kinds of genetic manipulation and experimentation.
