ABSTRACT

America consists of five ecological zones, namely tropical, subtropical, temperate, boreal, and polar. North America consists of four ecological zones, namely boreal (Canada), temperate (USA), subtropical (Mexico), and polar (Greenland and Alaska). These different zones are home to aquatic species such as Lemna minor and Azolla caroliniana. The tropical forests and shrub-land are primarily found in South America, consisting of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraquay, and the Caribbean islands, which are home to aquatic species such as Eichhornia crassipes and Hydrocleys nymphoides. The descriptions of several aquatic species native to America, including common names, botanical characteristics, distribution map, traditional uses, bioactivity, and compounds isolated, are discussed in this chapter.
