ABSTRACT

Mexico is one of the most diverse countries in the world of the more than 190 nations, regarding its flora and vertebrate fauna. The wide variety of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems throughout the country is probably the most evident expression of Mexico's biodiversity. Along the 11,122 km of Mexico's coastline, a great variety of landscapes can be found such as mangrove forests, dunes, coastal lagoons and coral reefs, among other formations. Mexico harbors an extraordinary biological and ecological diversity as documented in a significant body of scientific literature and biodiversity assessments generated in the country and abroad, and from the knowledge accumulated by indigenous groups. Coastal dunes harbor a vast flora diversity, a inventory registered 2,075 plant species, of which 95 are considered to be mainly associated to these ecosystems, the rest are often species from surrounding ecosystems such as xerophytic shrubs, pine forests, tropical dry forests and mangroves.
