ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the reasons behind the parenting style applied by mothers from a low economic group. The perspective of post-developmentalism is used to discuss the data. The data was gathered by using semi-structural interviews and analyzed by grounded theory. This study found that the value of children is embedded in parent’s parenting style. How parents perceive their children and their selves are influenced by the religious and socio-cultural values. This chapter recommends parenting programs that are culturally appropriate.
