ABSTRACT

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing grass species on earth and woody bamboos have been used in buildings for thousands of years. With the development of modern construction technologies, bamboo is not only used as decorative or structural material in modern buildings, but also plays important roles in transportation facilities, outdoor landscape and eco-tourism practices in rural area. Through systematic analysis and summarizing more than 50 presentations from around 30 different countries, which were delivered during Sustainable Bamboo Building Materials and Third International Conference on Modern Bamboo Structure (ICBS2018), while combing with practical experiences of projects implemented across the world by and with the support of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) as well as the information from INBAR’s partners, the authors provide on the one hand the state quo and trends of global modern bamboo construction industry and on the other hand presents a number of challenges and opportunities to guide the bamboo construction industry further development.
