ABSTRACT

A 14-year-old African American female with a history of eczema presents to the emergency department with pain, swelling, and purulent discharge from her scalp. One month prior to presentation, she had a hair weave placed at a salon. She had some initial pain after placement which subsided, but over the past week increasing pain and pruritus. A family member removed the weave yesterday and noted swelling and a foul-smelling discharge.
