ABSTRACT
A 5-year-old boy presents to the emergency department with fever, vomiting, and alteration in consciousness. He returned from a trip to Nigeria visiting family 2 weeks previously. On exam he is somnolent, pale, with a palpable liver. A peripheral blood smear is sent and is pictured here.
