ABSTRACT

The Bringing Wetlands to Market (BWM) project was initiated in 2011 to explore the connections between climate change, salt marshes, nitrogen loading, and coastal wetland restoration, and develop tools to incentivize investment in coastal wetland protection and restoration. This chapter aims to share information about the project as a case study for managers, restoration practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to illustrate the thoughtful progression of using coastal blue carbon (C) science to inform management and policy, as well as key lessons learned along the way. It presents the goals of the research, the project’s integrated research plan, engagement of end users, and approach to implementation, as well as its overall impact on advancing blue C awareness and application locally and nationally. The BWM project has had a significant impact on advancing coastal blue C research, by investigating and widely discussing the climate benefits of coastal wetlands and of improvements in management.
