ABSTRACT

Despite the original proposal 60 years ago that chromium was an essential trace element for mammals, chromium can no longer be considered an essential trace element. No benefits for humans have convincingly been observed from chromium supplementation so that chromium nutritional supplements cannot be recommended. Chromium is probably safe as a component of current multivitamins. Based on rodent studies, chromium(III) might have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and related conditions at higher doses than have been examined to date in clinical trials; however, quality randomized clinical trials are required to access this.
