ABSTRACT

Lead toxicity is one of the most important public health risks, especially in developing countries. Incidents of lead toxicity are still being reporting although a variety of public health and occupational measures have been attempted for controlling the exposure of lead. Lead exposure generates a variety of poisonous consequences on the renal, hematopoietic, reproductive, and central nervous systems, principally by means of raised oxidative stress. The poisonous effects of lead to these vital physiological systems take a fundamental function in the manifestation of diseases. The availability of comprehensive information may help to prevent lead exposure and to abolish the elevated blood lead levels in humans. Thus, this chapter provides an extensive report of most recent updates explaining lead exposure-associated toxic effects on public health, mechanisms of lead toxicity, and recent advances of intervention strategies and therapeutics for treating lead-induced toxic effects.
