ABSTRACT

An innovative foundation system for embankments on soft soils has been analyzed at the Ruhr Universität Bochum, Germany, in cooperation with HUESKER Synthetic GmbH, Germany. To get a deeper insight to the complex interactive system behavior centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations have been conducted. Based on the outcome of these investigations an analytical design approach has been developed, which considers the complex interactive behavior of the system. The analytical design approach has been applied to system configurations investigated in former studies but not used for the development of the approach. The comparison of the predicted and measured or calculated system behavior demonstrates the applicability of the analytical design approach. The procedure is an example of how results of physical model tests support the development of innovative solutions for practical engineering.
