ABSTRACT

The deep vibration compaction method includes densification of loose sands by means of shear deformation processes imparted by horizontal vibrations of vibrator probe. Model tests are conducted using a mini vibrator in order to study the physical processes the granular material undergoes during deep vibration compaction. Tests were performed in test rig of 1 m diameter and 1.1 m height. The mini vibrator is driven into the sand layer in the test rig at a frequency of 45 Hz, after reaching the required depth, the vibrator was set into the compaction frequency. The effect of compaction frequency on the degree and extent of compaction is studied. Compaction is carried out in frequency range of 15 Hz to 60 Hz. The effectiveness of the compaction is evaluated by means to mini cone penetration test (CPT). CPT values before compaction and after compaction are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the compaction.
