ABSTRACT

A new 5m radius, 240 g-tonne geotechnical centrifuge was commissioned at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in September 2016. The centrifuge is a C72 model manufactured by Actidyn Systems, capable of a maximum centrifuge acceleration of 130g. The centrifuge can accommodate samples up to 1m3 and provides additional capacity and capability to the centrifuge modelling facilities at UWA, which includes a beam and drum centrifuge that have been operating at UWA since 1989 and 2001, respectively. The paper provides details on the centrifuge and its ancillary equipment, and also on the capabilities of the National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility that now hosts the three centrifuges in a new 700 m2 laboratory.
