ABSTRACT

The development of removable icebreaker bow with propulsion also in the bow, not only in the pusher vessel, is described in the paper. Also a summary of removable bow icebreaking vessels used in the past is given. The concept development and model tests done in connection with WINMOS I and WINMOS II projects as well as the pilot vessel project for Lake Saimaa icebreaking are described. The different alternative propulsion systems are summarized.

An analysis and detailed description of the selected propulsion system (pat.pend.) with conventional shafts at the reamer area of wider bow is given. Performance comparison between the removable bow icebreaker and conventional icebreaker is also included and economic feasibility of the concept is summarized.
