ABSTRACT

One of the possible solutions for reduction of consequences of tanker ship accidents in Adriatic Sea or any other sensitive marine environment, is to investigate possible improvements in tanker structural design. The paper proposes tanker structural design methodology that leads to improved structural safety with multiobjective optimization using hull girder ultimate strength and ship crashworthiness quality measures as objectives in addition to the traditionally used weight or cost quality measures. Implementation of the methodology to the presented test case of Aframax class tanker structural design shows the current status of the undergoing research and illustrates benefits but also an added level of complexity to the concept design phase.
