ABSTRACT

The process of identifying competencies and validating selection measures for extreme environments can require different techniques than used for other work environments. The constraints associated with extreme environments do not always allow for traditional methodology. This chapter addresses some of the challenges faced when conducting work analysis and validating selection measures for extreme environments. Case studies illustrate how the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) addressed the challenges of analyzing astronaut work and validating selection and measurement tools for extreme environment work positions.
