ABSTRACT

The safety and success of astronaut crews depends not only on avoiding technical errors but also human errors due to ineffective teamwork. In this chapter we discuss team attitudes, behaviors, and cognitions, and provide an overview of the goals of astronaut and flight control teams. We discuss relevant literature on each team skill, implications for team skills in spaceflight, and new possibilities for future research and applications of the science. As NASA continues to push boundaries and explore the universe, organizational decision makers should not forget about the teams of astronauts on the front lines and the critical team skills they need for mission success.
