ABSTRACT

Marine environmental issues have broad implications for people living on the coast and using ocean resources. Managing these regions increasingly requires collaborative support and action from managers, scientists, and constituents, but bridging the gap among those from wide-ranging backgrounds and disciplines can be challenging. This article will summarize techniques for engaging public audiences, such as message development and delivery, and offer an overview of professional development opportunities. Strategies for facilitating discussion among specialized professionals and laypersons alike will also be presented in order for managers to better garner support for environmental management decisions. Organizations that have successfully implemented these methodologies in a variety of settings will be presented as tangible learning examples. If employed properly, science communication and engagement can strengthen current natural resource management policies and procedures through collaborative, community-informed decision-making and implementation.
