ABSTRACT

Aquaculture is the process of cultivating aquatic organisms in a controlled setting and may include some or all of the processes of breeding, rearing, and harvesting. Aquaculture is increasing on a global scale with disproportionate growth in Asia. Rearing of some species, particularly salmon and shrimp, over time, has received criticism for their negative influence on environmental health. New technologies and innovative approaches to aquaculture, such as integrated multitrophic aquaculture and utilizing carrying capacity for an ecosystem approach to aquaculture, provide a sustainable path forward for the management of aquaculture, particularly in coastal waters.
