ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on patient portals and personal health records, which are variants and subsets of the Electronic Health Record. In 2016, a separate HIMSS survey revealed that 58% of industry leaders had mobile-optimized patient portals in their hospital or health system. However, inpatient portals that is, patient portals for use in the hospital are an emerging area of interest. Patient portals began as Web-based services, intended for access outside of clinical settings. The author's perusal of medical literature published between 1991 and 2017 about personal health records paper-based or electronic as well as the related technologies, patient-held records, and patient portals, yielded 26 studies in which children and young adults were either involved, or represented by their parents. Twenty thousand patients were given the opportunity to read their clinical notes textual summaries of their doctor visits using their patient portals.
