ABSTRACT

Black Cotton soil, which is expansive in nature, have high percentage of clay minerals and show dramatic shrink-swell capacity. It possesses poor geotechnical sub grade characteristics which causes serious problems in construction of any structures on them. In this research an approach is made towards the improvement of various geotechnical properties of black cotton soil by blending it with waste materials like corn cob ash and iron ore tailings which acts as stabilizers. Iron ore tailings, the waste material from mining industry, and corn cob ash, an agriculture waste, are environmental pollutants. The purpose of this study is to define the properties of black cotton soil and to determine the optimum dose of stabilizers, required to improve the strength characteristics of soil, so that the stabilized soil may be used for pavement construction.
