ABSTRACT

Ionizing radiation from diagnostic imaging has the potential to induce cancers in patients. The current medical environment favors direct discussions of risks and benefits with patients and allowing them choice regarding their medical tests and treatments. This chapter discusses the use of informed decision-making with respect to radiation from medical imaging. We begin with discussion about informed consent and why it might not be the best approach for communicating radiation risks to patients. We then define and discuss informed decision-making and the advantages over the traditional informed consent approach.
