ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a complete review on development of flash fire manikins is presented, and the progress and characteristics of the flash fire manikin systems are summarized. Furthermore, the features of two typical types of sensor used in an instrumented flash fire manikin system are discussed and compared. Current existing standards for performance evaluation of thermal protective garments using the flash fire manikin are outlined. In addition, studies on thermal protective performance of clothing using flash fire manikins are reviewed, including the numerical modeling development and performance analysis and prediction. Finally, the future trends related to research on flash fire manikin are highlighted. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the flash fire manikin evaluation system as well as the future research directions in tool development and the approach for improving and developing new textile materials and clothing ensembles.
