ABSTRACT

The factors that influence tourist behavioral intentions to revisit heritage destinations such as Toraja in South Sulawesi, Indonesia remain a contemporary subject for extensive studies that could bring new findings in terms of discovering innovative factors that influence tourists’ behavior. Noticeable declines of visitors’ arrivals from 1997 to 2008, coupled with extreme fluctuations during the last seven years, are obviously a phenomenon in the Toraja’s tourism industry. This article explores the factors that are significant in influencing tourist behavioural intentions to revisit heritage destinations in Toraja. The study adopted an exploratory research design in surfacing potential influencing factors that could be embedded in the broad tourism policy of the government and eventually boost tourist figures to revisit heritage destination sites. Purposive sampling of 15 participants in 3 categories was conducted through semistructured interviews and the data obtained from the interviews were analysed using cross-case analysis. Thus, the study generated nine factors that could influence heritage tourists’ behavioral intentions to revisit the heritage destinations in Toraja.
