ABSTRACT

Chestnut coppice management has existed since the age of ancient Greece, and continues today, with a timber production area of 1.78 mln ha in Europe. Three main management options can be defined in relation to chestnut coppice systems: simple coppice, coppice with standards, and pollarding. In this chapter, strengths and weaknesses of the coppice system were analysed, considering positive and negative intrinsic and induced factors. Non-wood products, ecosystem services, wood, and related products are described, focusing on wood properties and different uses.
