ABSTRACT

The first part of the chapter describes different traditional plantation recovery techniques needed after years of abandonment or following the attacks of pests and diseases that have compromised their efficiency. When the compromised chestnut grove includes valuable varieties, light or severe pruning of the canopy, or topping are necessary. If the grafted variety is poor or if it is necessary to convert a coppice to an orchard, trees can be cut off and grafted, or, in the following year, the shoots originating from the stumps can be grafted. The second part of the chapter describes in detail an original method for European chestnut high-density orchard cultivation in Chile.
