ABSTRACT

The Material Point Method (MPM) is an effective method for large deformation analysis. However, compared to the Updated Lagrangian finite element method, extra calculation steps introduced in MPM make the method computationally more expensive. For axisymmetric large deformation problems, such as the cone penetration testing and pile installation, the 3-dimensional formulation of the method can be simplified to a less expensive, but physically valid, 2-dimensional axisymmetric form. The performance of the 2D-Axisymmetric formulation will be demonstrated through the numerical simulation of three axisymmetric problems such as a shallow foundation, soil column collapse and cone penetration testing.
