ABSTRACT

This chapter presents for all the research scientists and students out there without any knowledge of Nanoscale physics and chemistry. It covers the history, classification, synthesis and characterization techniques of different nanomaterials, as well as some examples of their common use in research and industry. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of a single nanoscale object—such as nanoscale electronic elements. A chemist’s approach for nanoparticles synthesis is colloidal growth. There are many “recipes” for preparation of every possible nanomaterial, and generally speaking, no description is valid for all protocols. Carbon nanotubes can be considered a single graphite sheet rolled up into a tube. Two different areas of nanotech-oriented research are being extensively developed, namely bionanotechnology and nanobiotechnology. Biotechnology is the use of living systems and their parts to develop new technologies or make products that help us improve the quality of our lives.
