ABSTRACT
People’s lifestyles are currently greatly affected by environmental, social and economic issues due to the fast population growth around the world. These urban issues can be easily addressed by emerging technology such as green communication in smart cities. Green smart cities aim to deliver superior facilities to citizens, improve the provision of high-quality civic resources and advance people’s lifestyles. This chapter presents a review of the various types of green architecture and technologies to lay the foundation for discussion of green smart cities. First, the meaning and road map of green smart cities is presented, together with background information. Various upcoming wireless and wired communication technologies that are functional in the realm of green communication in smart cities are then described. Finally, several cloud-based applications and future research perspectives are recommended for new researchers working in this emerging research area.
