ABSTRACT

A very important aspect for the development of typical green smart cities around the world lies in the proper management of waste produced by different sources within the city territory. With the recent advancement in technological innovation, smart cities of today’s world are harnessing the very capacity of Internet of things (IoT) technology to create an efficient system that can promote sustainable development of the whole city in much more efficient and effective way. To overcome the hindrance in the socioeconomic development of a typical green smart city, various schemes on smart waste management using wireless sensor networks (WSN) and IoT are discussed thoroughly in this chapter. The primary focus of this chapter is to cover up some of the essential concerns which includes incorporation of smart and green waste management techniques in smart cities, current architecture along with their features and advantages in bringing them into existence. Communication technologies which are useful for the implementation of such smart waste management systems are also described in detail. Apart from this, the chapter also discusses the challenges that one might face while integrating the concept of green smart waste management with the existing. At the end, different disposal methods, treatment methods and recycling methods are explored which can help the smart cities to manage its waste in a much more proper and safer way.
