ABSTRACT

Green healthcare is the necessity of our and future generations. Healthcare is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions, and needs to undergo transformations and breakthrough innovations. This chapter discusses the tools available and their associated benefits through which the healthcare sector can be revolutionized towards a zero-carbon footprint. Green healthcare is the incorporation of effective measures in the healthcare system that focus on reducing the carbon footprint and making the entire system environment-friendly. Green building design, energy management and waste management, along with leveraging eHealth technologies like telemedicine, HIS, Electronic Medical databases and IoT devices, are a few examples that can help in reducing the carbon footprint and bring us closer to Green Healthcare. The chapter discusses the iron triangle of healthcare for smart cities and what process and areas we need to focus upon to achieve a carbon neutral healthcare ecosystem.
