ABSTRACT

This paper presents the self-healing properties of asphalt mixtures with capsules. Calcium-alginate capsules, with encapsulated sunflower oil have been prepared and incorporated in a standard asphalt mixture for base courses. Capsule content added to the asphalt mixture was 0.5% by total mass of mixture. The effect of capsule content on the self-healing properties of asphalt mixtures was quantified at different healing times and temperatures by using a novel crack-healing test. The main results showed that healing levels of mixtures with capsules were higher than in mixtures without capsules. Also, healing levels of asphalt mixtures with, and without, capsules increased with the healing time and temperature until a maximum value.
