ABSTRACT

This paper presents a study about the mechanical performance of a new type of cold mix asphalt made with bitumen microcapsules. With this purpose, different amounts of bitumen microcapsules and bitumen emulsion were mixed with coarse aggregates and compacted to obtain Marshall test specimens. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of cold mix asphalt made with bitumen microcapsules and bitumen emulsion was evaluated by using the Marshall Stability test. The mechanical strength of cold mix asphalt specimens was also correlated with water content at different curing times. The main results showed that the cold mix asphalt made with bitumen microcapsules presents higher mechanical strength than the conventional cold mix asphalt made with bitumen emulsion for the different curing times evaluated.
