ABSTRACT

Team cognition is a vital aspect of performance for teams operating in dynamic and complex work environments. Great progress has been made in measuring components of team cognition, but more approaches that leverage the capabilities of current technologies are needed. Emerging unobtrusive measurement strategies for evaluating team cognition hold promise as a means to capture dynamic aspects of team cognition in a scalable way. These measurement strategies include shared physiology, linguistic and paralinguistic speech features, and activity tracking methods. This chapter addresses three goals. First, the general approach of unobtrusive measurement is reviewed and connected to the team cognition literature. Second, a framework of unobtrusive measurement features which can be used as indictors of team cognitive processing is provided. Third, methods for designing unobtrusive team cognition measurement systems will be detailed. This approach builds from event-based methods of concurrent simulation and measurement system development.
