ABSTRACT

In this paper we propose an original method for deformation monitoring of open pit mine slopes. We are using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system to perform aerial surveying. This method is based on strain-stress state analysis of the open pit side. Results of strain-stress modelling for different geometric and physical parameters are presented. Different types of quarries were marked out based on characteristics of deformation process in sloping edge zone. We have shown that in these areas, deformations indicating landslide could be several centimeters in size. Observing deformation in these zones could be rather difficult when performed from the ground surveying. So modern UAV based observation approach was proposed. One of the main benefits of this method is economic efficiency, since UAVs are getting better (from terms of range and positioning accuracy) and cheaper each year. It is important to note that all deformations measurements are contactless. Implementation of proposed method is being demonstrated on natural condition. 3D model of the quarry was built of centimeter accuracy. Some improvements and optimizations in data processing were shown as well.
