ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the value of taking a conflict perspective on the problem of workplace bullying. We begin with a comparative analysis of the definitions of conflict and bullying to map out their conceptual connection and identify aspects where they diverge and of most interest, where they converge. We conclude that bullying is most like prolonged, intractable, escalating destructive conflicts under conditions of extreme power imbalance. This characterization highlights several concepts from the conflict literature that may prove insightful for workplace bullying. Specifically, we discuss individual conflict management strategies and the influence of power, escalation and de-escalation, and coordinated intervention approaches. We sum up with cautions regarding the application of conflict concepts to the study and amelioration of workplace bullying.
