ABSTRACT

The increasing trend in mortality and financial losses caused by flooding over the past decades in the world has led water engineers and other relevant experts to rely on modern tools to take control of this natural phenomenon. Due to the precise calculations and flexibility in changing flow parameters and lower cost than the physical models, computer models have attracted more attention from researchers over the past few years. Therefore, in this chapter, due to the importance of the application of flood and river analysis software, the most popular modeling types of software in the field of flood and river flow simulation have been introduced, and their effectiveness is discussed. The results of the studies have shown that these types of software are very useful for hydrological simulations in watersheds. Regarding the use of the computer modeling system as confirmed in various studies, it can be admitted that using these models due to the high capability and access to the different methods for evaluation, would be very useful in flood control and hydrological studies provided that logical calibration parameters are included. The most suitable model for a specific application should be selected according to the goal and furthermore based on the characteristics of the watershed to be investigated. Overall, according to the regional conditions, it is conceivable to choose the appropriate software from different available models, and after calibration of the model, it could be utilized for riverine and flood management in the studied area.
