ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes discrete system simulation to redesign the layout and balance workloads in order to improve assembly line performance. Computer-aided simulation is used in the study in order to analyze and investigate the problems occurring in an assembly line. Compared to direct real experimentation, the computer-simulation approach has advantages, such as lower costs, shorter time, greater flexibility, and much smaller risk. The proposed layout will offer the benefits in terms of reduction of material handling time; effective utilization of men, equipment, and space; minimize overall production time; and provide employee convenience, safety, and comfort. The chapter identifies how simple tools can be used to improve work methods in an assembly line in order to increase productivity. By making changes in the process, and use of the heuristic method of line balancing, the time taken for each component was reduced.
