ABSTRACT

Hair cosmetics are intended to beautify the hair but may cause problems if improperly selected or used incorrectly. Naïve consumers may cause temporary or permanent hair damage while trying to improve hair appearance. Most hair damage occurs as a result of loss of cuticular scale, which accumulates over time as hair weathering continues with combing, brushing, styling, wind exposure, and hair chemical applications. Shampoo formulations are intended to keep the scalp hygienically clean while beautifying the hair to the greatest extent possible. Most shampoos are based on the synthetic detergent sodium lauryl sulfate. Hair conditioning agents are applied following shampooing and may be rinsed out, as in the case of an instant conditioner, or left in the hair, as in the case of a hair styling conditioner. Hair styling products can induce damage while assisting in the ability of the hair to hold a desired style.
