ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the necessary competences of school heads in developing a safe and healthy setting, in which safety aspects are integrated as part of a broader concept of school health. The holistic concept of the “good healthy school” serves as a conceptual framework to describe the role and responsibility of school heads. School heads are therefore one of the most important drivers of the development of teaching and schools, making them “change agents”. The chapter describes the health situation of students, teachers, and school heads. The reason for this is the interrelation between the new requirements and the burden on the health of school leaders and the health situation of students and teachers. The chapter describes the task of school health management. The concept of “salutogenic leadership”, based on Aaron Antonovsky’s sense of coherence model, shows how health management can become “healthy management” for the whole school and how health can effectively promote education in school development.
