ABSTRACT

Almost everyone, at least once, has heard of the so-called Holy Shroud, the Shroud of Turin, or more simply the Shroud, perhaps referring to the fact that the body image depicted on the cloth had been painted by a medieval artist. However, very few people had the chance to investigate the number of mysteries that make the Shroud a unique object in the world, not only impossible to reproduce but also impossible to be explained only by scientific means. The Shroud is the most studied object in the world, both in the archaeological and obviously in the religious field. The first book on the Shroud containing scientific data was written by Alfonso Paleotto in 1598, a few years after that the Shroud had been moved to Italy, in Turin, in 1578. This data unequivocally demonstrates the long-lasting interest in the Holy Shroud shown all over the world not just by believers.
