ABSTRACT

The large-leaved and coarse textured tobacco plant was brought to Turkey by the British, Venetian, and Spanish sailors nearly 400 years back. It flourished well under the varying ecological conditions of the country with the help of skillful, meticulous, and determined Turkish farmers. The plant acquired very high-quality, being thin, fragrant, sweet tasting, and low in nicotine. Very different types of tobacco are cultivated around the world. Out of these, the oriental type is mainly produced in Turkey. This type of tobaccos has been in demand for many years because of its exquisite smell, taste, impressive color, good burning quality, and the blend. The reason why other types cannot keep the quality of tobacco grown here is the climate and soil conditions as well as intensive hand labor operations undertaken by Turkish farmers. This paper presents an overview of the production techniques of oriental tobacco together with information on the tobacco varieties at global level.
