ABSTRACT

K. J. Gaston and J. I. Spicer define what biodiversity is by giving known examples. Dinosaurs are a good example and there are fossil records in Zambia to support their existence in the Jurassic Period. Extinction is a common occurrence in the rise of biodiversity globally. The level of biodiversity will rise if there is an increase in the level of speciation than the rate of extinction. The management and conservation of biodiversity in Zambia is achieved both at land use level and at legislative and policy levels. M. Harkonen classify the Zambian fungi into three major groups, namely, the Glomeromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. The Zambezian region in which the Zambia falls is characterized by a number of tree species that are the key in the habitat names. This region is characterized by the genera of tree species that include, Acacia, Brachystegia, Colosphospermum, Combretum, Terminalia, Hyparrhenia, and Richardsiella.
