ABSTRACT

Dillenia suffruticosa Martelli is a common wayside tree in Borneo belonging to the Dilleniaceae family. D. suffruticosa was used by the Rungus people in Sabah to externally treat cancerous soreness. Triterpenoids are common in D. suffruticosa and the few isolated so far included the well-known betulinic acid. Annona muricata L. is a tropical fruit tree species belonging to the Annonaceae family. A. muricata was empirically used to treat cancer by people of Dayak Iban in West Kalimantan Province of Indonesia. A. muricata has been described as a safe anti-cancer agent as reported by Hansra and cited by Rady, who reviewed its use in a woman with a chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer. Aglaia foveolata Panell is a rainforest tree found throughout Borneo and belongs to the tree family Meliaceae. A. foveolata has traditionally been used by the Kelabits for stomach ailments but not as treatment for cancer.
