ABSTRACT

Nutrients are not only contaminants for the environment but also valuable resources. The existing treatment approaches mostly focus on removal of nutrients, while next generation treatment technologies will need to take recovery into consideration. As an emerging treatment technology, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have been studied for nutrient removal and recovery in energy efficient and sustainable ways. The removal and recovery in BES involve bioelectrochemical, biological, chemical and physical processes. In this chapter, we have presented recent advances in nutrients removal and recovery from various wastes by using BES, analyzed the efficiency of BES-based nutrient removal and recovery and discussed the main challenges for future development. This chapter aims to inspire critical investigations and studies toward nutrients removal and recovery in BES.
