ABSTRACT

Economic activity of Mongolia has traditionally been based only on livestock husbandry and agriculture. The ecosystem division was originally focused on the identification of gaps for biodiversity conservation in Mongolia. In Mongolia, there are two major forest types, boreal coniferous forest and sub-boreal mixed forest. For Mongolia, the issue of special protected areas has been the core of government policy and it is the basis to ensure preservation and sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and to maintain a sustainable ecological condition. The Government of Mongolia has been taking step by step actions to include areas, which are crucial for maintaining the ecological integrity of regional and global importance, in the World Heritage sites and the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
