ABSTRACT

The high level of biodiversity and endemism of Greece are noticeable and Greece is the most diverse, in proportion to its area, Mediterranean country in all levels of biodiversity. The three levels of biodiversity are commonly recognized – genetic, species and ecosystem diversity are actually umbrella terms typified, they are: genetic diversity; species diversity; and ecosystem diversity. Biodiversity studies commonly use some sort of meta-analysis on large numbers of ecosystems across different geographic areas. A human-oriented way to assess the biodiversity of a country is the account of the services and products that local ecosystems provide. Importantly, Greek ecosystems produce high-quality honey from various herbs. The fauna of Greece has more affinities with the fauna of the eastern Mediterranean, a region affected by Europe, Central Asia, Anatolia, the Middle East and Africa. In many regions of Greece, the prevailing faunal elements are East-Mediterranean.
