ABSTRACT

The current way of life, environmental care policies, search and use of biodegradable materials and the interest of consumers on natural food additives are reasons to make use of essential oils (EOs), they are an interesting ingredient to produce eco-friendly food packaging and they can confer functional properties to package like as antioxidant and antimicrobial, these properties can extend shelf life of foods and in this way increase the value of the products.

In this document shows the most recent reports on essential oils used in active food packaging, methods of adding oils, impact on several properties during formation of active package, antimicrobial and antioxidant action of EOs reported under different conditions.
